Imagine: you’re home alone, maybe it’s the middle of the night, and everything seems normal. Suddenly, you feel a strange pain in your chest. At first, you think it’s just fatigue. But then the pain intensifies, you start sweating profusely, and the discomfort radiates to your left arm and neck. You’re short of breath, and your heart is pounding. You realize: you could be having a heart attack, and you’re alone. What do you do?

This scenario is terrifying, but knowing what to do can make a huge difference. In this article, based on the insights of cardiologist Dr. Andrรฉ Wambier, we present     five important steps     you can take if you find yourself in this potentially life-threatening situation.

Message

๐Ÿ‘‰Important concepts

  • Recognize the symptoms of a heart attack.
  • Call for help immediately.
  • Stay calm and conserve your energy while waiting for help.
  • Find out what to do if you have aspirin on hand.
  • Understand the importance of medical intervention and quick action.

๐Ÿ“ŒRecognize the symptoms

First, it’s crucial to recognize the symptoms of a heart attack. Here are     seven key signs     to look out for:

  1. Chest pain    : This is the most common symptom. It often feels like pressure, tightness, or heaviness in the chest.
  2. Radiating pain    : Pain may radiate to the arms (especially the left one), neck, jaw, or back.
  3. Shortness of breath    : You may feel like you can’t breathe, even when you’re resting.
  4. Sweating    : Unusual cold sweats may be a sign of discomfort.
  5. Nausea or vomiting    : This can sometimes be confused with stomach problems, especially in women.
  6. Feeling dizzy or unsteady    : Feeling faint or unsteady could be a sign of a serious problem.
  7. Severe anxiety    : A heart attack may be accompanied by a sudden feeling of depression or panic.

If you experience any of these symptoms, especially chest pain, it is important to act quickly.

➡️First step: ask for help

If you suspect you’re having a heart attack,     the first thing you should do is call for help    . You can call an ambulance or ask someone nearby for help. If you’re alone, call 911 immediately. In many places in Brazil, the emergency numbers are 911 or 192.

You might think, “Shouldn’t I just go to the hospital?” The answer is     no    . Driving can be dangerous, especially if you lose consciousness or become too weak to drive safely.

๐Ÿ‘‰Why it’s important to ask for help

  • Time is of the essence    : the sooner you get medical help, the better your chances of survival. Heart muscle can begin to die within minutes without oxygen.
  • Emergency personnel are trained    to provide immediate assistance and safely transport the patient to hospital.

➡️While waiting for help

While waiting for help, it’s important to remain as calm as possible. Here’s what you can do:

  • Sit or lie down    : Find a comfortable position that takes the strain off your heart. If possible, lean back and slightly raise your head.
  • Breathe slowly    : Focus on your breathing. Try to take slow, deep breaths to manage anxiety and conserve energy.
  • Avoid physical activity    : Try not to move or exert yourself too much. Any movement puts a strain on your heart.

➡️This aspirin

If you have access to aspirin and aren’t allergic to it, consider it. Here’s how:

  • Chew aspirin    : Chewing speeds up absorption into the bloodstream. It is recommended to take 2–3 low-dose (81 mg) aspirin tablets.
  • Why use aspirin:    It helps thin the blood and may reduce the size of blood clots that block blood flow to the heart.

➡️Misconceptions about coughing

You may have heard that coughing can help prevent a heart attack. This is     a myth    . Coughing won’t help dissolve clots in your arteries. If you’re conscious and able to cough, it means your heart is still beating, and you should focus on getting help instead of trying to clear it.

➡️What happens if you find someone unconscious?

If you encounter someone who appears to be having a heart attack and is unconscious:

  • Call the emergency services    : Call for help immediately.
  • Begin CPR    : If the victim is not breathing, begin CPR. Give firm, rapid chest compressions at a rate of 100–120 compressions per minute.
  • If you have access to a defibrillator, use it    : If there is an automated external defibrillator (AED) nearby, use it as soon as possible.

๐Ÿ“ŒUnderstand your risk of heart attack

The likelihood of having a heart attack may be increased by certain factors:

  • Age    : Men over 45 and women over 55 are at increased risk.
  • Lifestyle factors    : smoking, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, diabetes, obesity and lack of exercise are factors that influence the occurrence of this disease.
  • Family history    : A family history of heart disease can also increase your risk of developing the disease.

๐ŸŒฑPrevents heart attacks

While you can’t control everything, you can take some steps to reduce your risk:

  • Eat a healthy diet    : focus on fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and lean protein.
  • Regular exercise    : Aim for at least 150 minutes a week of moderate-intensity exercise.
  • Stress management    : Find healthy ways to manage stress, such as meditation or yoga.
  • Regular checkups    : Attend regular doctor visits to monitor the health of your heart.

๐ŸŽฏApplication

Knowing what to do in the event of a heart attack could save your life or someone else’s. Recognizing the symptoms, calling for help, and staying calm are important steps. Remember,     time is a muscle    . The faster you react, the better your chances of survival.
